Good Reader

“Good Readers “
In “Good Readers and Good Writers” author Vladimir Nabokov lists various different traits that he believes a good reader must possess. First he believes a good reader must pay attention to details. This is important because a reader could easily miss a vital part of a story by skimming or rushing the reading. The next thing he thinks good readers should have is the ability to come into their reading without any generalizations about what they are about to read. Next he feels a good reader needs to have a good open-minded imagination.  Last Nabokov feels a good reader will have both an artistic and scientific temperament so they can see the story from both sides.
I definitely agree with Nabokov and his ideas of a good reader. People who really want to absorb a book or any writing need to approach the material with an open-mind and the desire to take a journey. Reading can sometimes be tedious and dedication to the material is important; part of this is understanding what it takes to be a good reader and trying to achieve all this. A good reader also needs to be patient because they will inevitable come across something that they may have a hard time with and patience will be the only thing that gets them through the material. Good readers also need to know well even to know that they are always learning and that no one is a perfect reader and learning to be better is always a possibility.
While I do consider myself a good reader I also realize I have faults, one of which is rushing. I’m not sure why but when I read I feel rushed to finish. No matter what the material may be I feel a strong desire to get done quickly. This is obviously not a good thing! I have to actively try to slow myself down and actually consciously try to read slow and absorb more so I don’t end up reading the same things over and over to absorb them. Despite this I think I am a good reader because I love reading and am dedicated to learning how to be a better reader.
